# Top terms (/docs/proof-points/top-terms)

Top terms returns the most frequent topics or organizations in matching proof points. Use it to see which entities dominate a filtered corpus.

**Endpoints:**

* `POST /proof-points/top-terms` — all document types — [playground](/docs/api-reference/endpoints/proof_points_top_terms_proof_points_top_terms_post)
* `POST /proof-points/news-articles/top-terms`
* `POST /proof-points/patents/top-terms`
* `POST /proof-points/research-articles/top-terms`
* `POST /proof-points/earnings-calls/top-terms`
* `POST /proof-points/pdfs/top-terms`
* `POST /proof-points/projects/top-terms`

Type-specific routes apply the same request on one dataset. Shared proof-point filters (`query`, `topicQuery`, `gpeQuery`, `start` / `end`, and so on) still apply.

## Field [#field]

| Field   | Purpose                                |
| ------- | -------------------------------------- |
| `field` | `topic` or `organization`              |
| `take`  | Number of terms to return (default 10) |

## Request Pattern [#request-pattern]

```json
{
  "field": "organization",
  "take": 10,
  "topicQuery": "11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111111111",
  "start": "2023-01-01T00:00:00Z",
  "end": "2024-12-31T23:59:59Z"
}
```

## Response Notes [#response-notes]

Each bucket has `id` (topic or organization UUID), `count` (matching documents), and `name`.

Use the all-types route when you want rankings across datasets; use a type-specific route to isolate patents, news, or another corpus.
